IMS: What it is and What Are its Benefits?

Issues related to mental health impacts millions of people across the country each year. Unfortunately, there are countless individuals and families who go without necessary mental health resources every day. This can lead to a number of serious complications that can make it hard for that individual to maintain relationships with family members, friends, and employers. While there used to be a stigma surrounding issues related to mental health, this veil is starting to lift. Now, there are resources available for people who struggle with addiction, substance abuse, and mental health disorders. One of the resources to know about is called incidental medical services, often shortened to IMS.

What is IMS?

Incidental medical services, also known as IMS, are services provided during detoxification at a residential inpatient facility that are equipped to deal with any medical issues that may arise during this process. Sometimes, these medical issues can even be life-threatening. For this reason, IMS services are implemented to ensure people can get through detoxification safely. With IMS services, individuals have access to trained medical professionals who are going to be with them on site during detox to provide assistance 24 hours per day, seven days per week. IMS services do not provide primary care that one would find at a general practitioner’s office.

What are the Benefits of IMS Services for Addiction Treatment?

There are several benefits that come with IMS services when someone is seeking help for substance abuse and addiction treatment. First, IMS services are going to allow an inpatient facility to collect clients’ medical history. Just because the primary focus is on helping someone recover from addiction does not mean that there aren’t other medical issues that might impact one’s health. If someone has type 1 diabetes, they are still going to need to count carbs and take insulin during their stay at an inpatient facility. IMS services will allow treatment centers to make sure this happens.

IMS services can provide individuals who need to take other medications with the supervision they need. Even prescription medications have the potential to be dangerous. Some people end up addicted to them. IMS services ensure clients take their medication as prescribed.

The biggest benefit of IMS services is that it allows the facility to monitor a client’s health status and to make sure that the person does not require a transfer to another facility. For example, the withdrawal process regarding alcohol and benzodiazepine can be life-threatening. Both of these conditions can lead to seizures while a client goes through withdrawal. While it is possible to break seizures, some seizures require incredibly dangerous medications to remain at bay. In this case, a client may need to be transferred to a hospital. If this happens, IMS services will make sure the situation is handled properly.

Finally, IMS services are there to make sure that clients are as comfortable as possible as they go through the recovery process. Clients are going to be evaluated regularly to make sure that nothing else is needed to make them more comfortable. Pain medication, anti-inflammatory medications, and other treatments can be used to increase someone’s comfort level as they go through these first few steps of the addiction treatment process. With IMS services and trained medical providers, addicts will have the ability to make it through some of the toughest times of addiction treatment.
