Types of Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Services

Depending on the addiction treatment facility that you choose, your drug rehab experience may look different. Here are some of the common types of rehabilitation programs that may be available to you in San Francisco rehab centers.

Common Treatment Programs

Detoxification: Medical detox is the first step for patients recovering from a substance use disorder. Often, many patients attempt to detox on their own, which can lead to unpleasant symptoms or a medical emergency.

Medication assisted treatment may be used in a detox center to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms and provide you with around the clock medical care.

Inpatient Treatment: Usually referred to as residential treatment, this model will provide you with additional support and care after detox. You will live in the treatment center with other residents that are also in varying stages of drug addiction recovery.

Residents participate in all day programming which can include support groups, individual therapy, as well as other therapeutic activities.

Outpatient Treatment: Also called intensive outpatient programming (IOP), this allows you to continue treatment from home. Here you will still be able to return to the treatment center for multiple hours per day or week to attend programming. This may be best for those that have strong sober living support environments outside of the treatment center.

Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment: Many treatment facilities also offer services to address substance use and mental health disorders.

Often, patients struggling with substance abuse may have additional mental health disorder like anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder.

Enlight Treatment Center’s co-occurring disorders program allows patients to receive quality medical care while also working on substance abuse-related issues.

Is Inpatient Treatment the Right Fit For Me?

After reading about different treatment styles, you may be debating whether or not an inpatient rehabilitation center is the right fit for you.

Here are some reasons why detoxification and inpatient treatment may be a good fit for you.

Reasons to Attend Detox or Inpatient Therapy

  • You are actively using and need detoxification. Detox in a rehab center can give you a safe environment to minimize symptoms and health risks.
  • You need additional accountability to keep from using. Quality care at inpatient facilities can give patients the support network they need.
  • You need additional therapeutic support. Many residents realize once arriving at treatment that their mental health is a large factor. In inpatient treatment, residents are able to get the quality care they need to address mental health concerns in a group and individual setting.
  • You have not been successful in previous treatments. If you have relapsed after detox or outpatient treatment in the past, you may find that inpatient services can help you to maintain sobriety long-term.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Programs

Dual diagnosis treatment is a unique approach used by treatment facilities to help patients recovering from multiple disorders.

Often, substance abuse can be triggered or intensified by other disorders. Some of these can include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anorexia, bulimia, and other disorders.

The rehab center will begin by addressing the substance use disorder and then move into treating the dual diagnosis. This approach allows patients to receive the care they need to recover from multiple disorders and develop necessary coping skills.

This is different from co-occurring disorders treatment, as that mainly focuses on treating other medical conditions associated with drug addiction.

Health Insurance and Substance Abuse Treatment

After the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2014, insurance companies are no longer allowed to deny insurance coverage, treatment, or charge additional premiums for pre-existing conditions.

Due to the intensive mental health and medical services needed to treat substance abuse, addiction disorders are considered pre-existing conditions.
